アレクサンドル・デュマは本書『ライン川の愛の冒険』（原題は『愛の冒険』）を1859年10月から1860年1月にかけて、『モンテ・クリスト』紙に連載した。1857年8月末にハンガリー系オーストリア人の舞台女優リラ・フォン・ブリュオフスキーがデュマを訪問、その後彼女とベルギーからライン川旅行をする途中で、女性と友情を交わすというドン・ファンのデュマにとっては至難の苦行を堪える顛末を、いつものように虚々実々面白おかしく語るのである。その中にはかつてイタリアで一緒に旅をした歌姫との恋をベッドで寝物語のように語るという回想録とも旅行記を兼ねた二重の入れ子構造になっている。さて、この歌姫とはいったいだれであろうか、それが本書の解題の種明かしの楽しみである。
