【Description】 Before, During, and After the Revolution: A Historical Survey?co-authored by Eug?ne Scribe (1791?1861) and Michel-Nicolas Balisson de Rougemont (1781?1840)?is a remarkably ambitious play. It vividly demonstrates on stage how the French Revolution transformed the lives of the Churlgy family, a typical aristocratic household, over a span of approximately forty years (1787, 1793, and 1825). Strikingly, the authors captured each of these eras through three distinct theatrical genres: comedy, drama, and vaudeville. Scribe masterfully depicts a changing France: the pre-revolutionary period ruled by the Ancien R?gime and symbolized by primogeniture; the revolutionary period marked by radical democratization and the introduction of divorce laws; and the post-revolutionary period under the constitutional monarchy of the Restoration. This volume marks the very first Japanese translation of this thought-provoking masterpiece by Scribe, the greatest playwright of the 19th century, whose work has rarely been introduced in Japan.
